FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Q: Do I need rowing experience?
A: No. Students with or without rowing experience are welcome to join the team. Around 80% of our rowers joined without prior experience. We teach all of the technique and form necessary to become a great rower/coxswain.
Q: What qualities do I need to be a rower?
A: Ability to work and communicate with others, strong work ethic, competitive drive.
Q: How much does rowing cost?
A: Typically, our dues can range from $600- 700 per semester. This cost helps cover boat permits, storage, insurance, repairs, travel (transportation, hotels, regatta registration fees, etc), individual athlete costs as well as any additional costs that we might have.
The Rowing Club Fee can be made in full, or as a payment plan (which can be negotiated/created with our treasurers on a individual basis). More information will given be out to the athletes within the first few weeks of the season.
Q: What is your practice schedule?
A: We practice Monday-Friday from 5:00- 7:00 am and Saturday from 9:00- 11:00 am on the Tempe Town Lake. We know this sounds like a lot (especially due to the time of practices), but believe it or not, you will get used to getting up early. It’s much more bearable to practice before the sun is in full-blaze, and you feel ready for the day ahead after practice.
Q: Is this a Division 1 sport?
A: No, both the Women’s and Men’s rowing teams are club teams. This has its upsides and downsides, but most collegiate teams across the country are actually club teams, so we compete against just as many schools as a D1 team would.
Q: I think I want to try this out. What are the next steps?
